SB409 Amendment Update

IACTE Colleagues –

We want to provide an update on the status of Senate Bill 409, which we have been monitoring closely.  Attached is the amended bill that passed unanimously out of the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday, the 20th.  The bill now goes to the full Senate for a vote.  Should the Senate pass the bill, it then goes to the House, beginning in the House Education Committee.

Along with the Bill’s amended language, we have attached a series of questions/concerns about each element.  At this point, we recommend that you share this information with your institution’s leadership and legislative liaison.  Advice that we have received is that discussions with senators and House committee members, should this bill be approved by the Senate, should be legislative liaisons or concerned citizens, rather than education deans.

In addition to these efforts, IACTE leadership is continuing dialogue with the Department of Education as to ways that we might work collaboratively to design an effective accountability teacher education process.  We have communicated repeatedly that we are in favor of such a system, and we have asked repeatedly for the Department to share with institutions information that it has which could be a part of an accountability process.  Please know that this is an active work in progress.

IACTE Executive Committee Ballot

IACTE Colleagues –

It is that time of year to hold the election for new members to the IACTE Executive Committee.  Leaving the Committee will be TJ Oakes from Purdue University and Jan Westrick from Valparaiso University; both have been excellent representatives and team members of the Committee.  This election is to replace these at-large positions.

Ballots, ONE from each institution, are due to me (jshedd@indiana.edu) by MONDAY, MARCH 18.

Thank you –

Jill
