IACTE Day at the Statehouse Invitation - RESPONSE DUE FEBRUARY 19

IACTE Colleagues -

The third annual IACTE Day at the Indiana Statehouse“Meet Indiana’s Future: Our Future Teachers” - is March 7, 2018.  All IACTE members are encouraged to join us for a day where junior and senior teacher candidates, Indiana’s future teachers, may interact with their legislators to discuss and to highlight the clinical and real world experiences that they have throughout their programs.  Our event will be on the south side of the Statehouse third floor. A light lunch will be served.  The entire program will run from 10:30AM until 1:30PM Eastern Time.

This year we will include a new collaboration with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) to feature candidates who have earned a Next Generation (NextGen) Teacher Scholarship.  A list of the recipients for 2017-2018 is attached.  While all the recipients will be getting an invitation from ICHE, we strongly encourage you to consider including the upperclassmen recipients as representatives of your institution for the Day at the Statehouse.

As an IACTE member institution, we encourage you to identify and support the travel for two-three teacher candidates and a faculty or staff representative to participate in this important event. Also we are asking that participating institutions pay a registration fee of $100 to help support the lunch that we have for the legislators and students. Attached is an “invoice” in which you can include your institution name and the fee amount.  ($100 is the minimum registration fee.  Any additional support will be appreciated.)

Please be strategic in who participates; select experienced teacher candidates to speak with legislators about their field experiences and the quality of their educator preparation program.  Include teacher candidate representatives from a variety of content areas and from various legislative districts.  Consider including any upperclassmen NextGen Scholarship recipients. The candidates should have a positive disposition, a good understanding of their program, and the vital skill of focused conversation when speaking with their legislators.  As a reminder, the goal of this event is not to participate in an educational political debate, but to introduce, inform, discuss, and celebrate.  If you are interested in participating, please complete the Google Doc below with the following information to Jonathan Dee atjjdee@bsu.edu by February 19, 2018.

  • Candidates’ names and e-mail addresses
  • Candidates’ content/program areas

Upon receipt of your candidates who are participating, we will forward to you a sample communications that we ask that your candidates send to their local representatives, along with talking points that candidates can be prepared to share. We encourage you to participate in this exciting event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jonathan at jjdee@bsu.edu or call him at 765-285-1862.
